I take lots of vitamins…try to get an all around balance…..
You are right about vitamins….the only thing is, our soil doesn’t have the nutrients as it used to….I do my best to eat right, along with supplementing with vitamins….They do help.

I try to eat right, stay away from snacking stuff like that, but Hey at my age lets be honest, I need all the preservatives I can get.

There is no connection at all. The levels of hormones are not affected by a vasectomy. Only the sperm is blocked from entering the semen. Everything else stays the same.

I had a vasectomy at 21. I know other men that did as well. I am over 40 now, and have never experienced any ill effect. I don’t know anyone else that has.

Religious groups are firmly against vasectomies because it can potentially lead to fewer group members. I am pretty sure they are responsible for any myths about vasectomies.

A good homeopath should be able to help some. Also, there are some things to avoid which you can do -

don’t do triclosan (the additive in all things anti-bacterial – with the few exceptions of those that are just plain alcohol) Regular soap and warm water is antibacterial enough to keep you safe.

avoid fluoride as it does horrible things to the thyroid. NO you do not need fluoride for healthy teeth. It is a by-product of agricultural processes which would have to be disposed of as toxic waste if they didn’t tell us it was wonderful for teeth and put it in the water supply. Fluoride has long been used in chemical warfare.

supplement with iodine, that does help support the thyroid.

keep rested and avoid pharmaceuticals as they also work against thyroid.

support your adrenals, as the symptoms can overlap and compound your thyroid issues.

Soy is shown to cause problems, but more so when fed to infants as soy formula. Infants fed soy formula are more likely to develop thyroid problems in their teens. I’d say, if it has that effect on infants, you may as well drop it from your list of edibles too. For more info on the dangers of soy read "Soy: The Abominable Bean" Can be found on the internet.

Check with your local naturopath for a natural thyroid supplement. I can’t remember the name of it right now, but my mom does all the above and takes that supplement when the above isn’t quite enough because she is either sick or overtired. Thyrolate is what comes to mind, but don’t quote me. Many docs hate the use of natural thyroid because they can’t control it, btw, so be forewarned if you are going to address any of this with your doc. They may not like it.

Definitely visit the Stop the Thyroid Madness link that DNA provided. I was under the impression that Armour was by prescription only. I’ll have to check that. If you can get it, that is a good option.

You did not specifically ask about chiropractic, but it’s along the same vein as your question. I am a DC in Boise, ID. It was difficult starting out, as any new business is in the beginning. It takes time to learn how to communicate with people. As you know, the majority of Americans are committed to the medical model of healthcare. We are asking them to begin to take responsibility for their own health and to discard the idea that their doctor, of any type, is responsible for them. Many people think that health problems just fall out of the sky and hit them in the head, that they had nothing to do with it. The difficulty comes when we try to change this viewpoint. People are at a level of consciousness that suites them; it does not matter what you say. More and more I am seeing patients who want to take some ownership for their health care. They see the value behind the cost and are willing to pay for it out of pocket.

I think now is a good time to get into this field of natural healthcare. Baby boomers are older and sicker, they have some money to spend and they are pretty educated as a whole.

My only advice is that you enter into a profession that has some robust credentials and licensing. This has nothing to do with the level of expertise and understanding and everything to do with your marketability and scope of practice. Patients get off on knowing that you had 6 or 10 years of college and you had to pass a national board exam and that you are licensed by your state etc…

The key to success in this business is to be able to effectively communicate what you do and its value. If you can do that, you’ll make it.

Which one do you trust more?

Modern western medicine (medications, scientifically based statistics, doctor prescribed health and nutrition guides, etc.)

Alternative medicine (herbs, organic foods, natural folk-medicine treatments, and a personal approach to what you feel is best for your health, etc.)

Or do you draw from both modern and alternative?

Much of what doctors learn today is based on recognizing diseases and prescribing pills for them. Sometimes I think of doctors as sales reps for pharmaceutical companies. Not too many of them try to find root causes. However, there is one branch of medicine that does, it is referred to as functional medicine. I wish they would get more press.

On the plus side of modern medicine is the FDA. I think that they probably do things which are unethical at times, but they also force companies to meet certain standards. The alternative medicine people have no such restrictions.

I knew someone who was diagnosed with stomach cancer. She was told she only had two weeks to live. A friend of their family, who made his living selling supplements, told her that no doctor had the right to tell someone they only had two weeks to live. They believed him. He sold them vitamins, at cost. The family took a totally positive attitude, and wouldn’t allow any talk of death. Her family was robbed of that precious time (she died in two weeks).

If this salesman was a medical doctor, he could have been sued for malpractice, but since he was part of an unregulated alternative business, he got away with it.

When it comes to my health, I will look at alternative sources for some things, but I would never gamble with things like diabetes, cancer, or high blood pressure.

Anyone have any healthy ideas?

Yeah, I agree lots of water helps. I also take a few fiber supplements throughout the day, as well eating foods high in fiber. I heard fiber makes you feel more full, and it seems to be working!
I just started eating breakfast every day about a year ago, that has helped me a lot in making it through work, I just started having a protein shake (or, whey powder and milk, whatever you wanna call it!) with breakfast, right after I work out, which seems to keep me from feeling hungry for a long time.
I also started eating less food more frequently, so when you eat, you are starving hungry and so you don’t eat as much, and don’t feel over stuffed after wards!

That’s also why we hear the health care community condemning natural alternatives as being ‘unsafe’ in order to make what they do and the drugs they push look better.
And it’s sad how too many people fall for their antics and actually join in on tooting that biased horn.

If I were you, I’d transfer to a 4 year and earn a B.S in Biology. Then, when you do your M.S, you’ll be able to focus your research on natural health. Bachelor’s degrees are often very well rounded, and Master’s specific.

I’m looking for something to help me with HPV/Genital Warts.

First off, have you consulted at a doctor? You should do that, incase things get worse. I’ve heard of cases of genital warts/HPV getting quite bad. Just a hint of advice. Other than that, there are plenty of remedies you could try. I know the stress that comes with an STD, and you should try and get your mind off it. Take a warm bath and just relax. Now for actually remedies, there is aromatherapy. It has a booming market and people are starting to use it more. It also is quite affordable. I wish you luck and hope you get cured!

Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM are the three most popular and common ingredients for joint health that help with cartilage and ligaments.
If you’re looking for more than that to help support the rest of the joint tissues, you could also try Microlactin, Hyaluronic Acid, Tart Cherry Extract, Litozin (Danish Rose Hips), and Avovida (a combination of avocado and soy).

The only thing to watch out for is allergies… the Microlactin is from milk and the Glucosamin is typically from Shellfish (those are the most common allergens).

I’ve read so many articles bashing this school, people saying to beware of the lack of accredations and alumni. I can’t imagine why…I am looking to go to school for nutritional therapy and have received a catalogue in the mail. It seems like a really great school. Does anyone have any information on this? Thanks!

Unfortunately, anything considered as alternative medicine will be strongly criticized by Quackwatch, being it is an organization comprised of medical professionals. Most of the arguments they post are more opinion based then based on facts, and should be taken as such.

The main reason Clayton is not accredited is because it only requires 60 credit hours for a B.S. degree, where "traditional" schools require 120 hours. Accreditation does not equal quality education, it just means it is recognized by the government.

From all the research I have personally done, Clayton seems to be a very good school and is legit. Basically it all boils down to what you read or who you talk to. Those who believe in natural medicine have a far different opinion about these types of schools then those who practice the more excepted forms of medicine. The best thing to do is just find the school that best suits your needs and be sure to also research the "sources" of any negative publicity before assuming it is a bad school.

Some other schools you can also look into are Bastyr University, Westbrook University, and the University of Natural Medicine.

From your own experience, what do you find useful in helping young children with autism?

Most helpful is teaching them what they need to know. Autism is hard-wired in the brain by the time it’s detectable; all you can do is teach them–and teach them the way they learn best–how to deal with the world those brains weren’t made for.

General health is important, of course. In fact, it’s more important than it is for a typical child because autistic childrens’ senses are often "unfiltered"–that is, they don’t ignore what typical brains might consider irrelevant, and are consequently flooded by sensory data.

If some of that data is coming from an illness–even a minor allergy or something like lactose intolerance–then it will almost certainly cause problems with learning and with coping with the world. That means that if your kid isn’t living in a relaxed, friendly, irritant-free environment, he won’t learn nearly as well as he ought to.

The biggest problem, potentially, is untreated epilepsy. Epilepsy can sometimes be difficult to detect and is very common in autistic people, so it’s important to make completely sure it’s either not there or carefully managed.

I am planning to study doctor of naturopathic, but during researching I found that clayton college offered this distance learning program that I don’t have to leave my house and the baby, which is perfect. But the thing is i’m searching the accreditation of this college and it is accredited by the american association of drug less practitioners and the american naturopathic medical accreditation. I don’t if this only to accredit this college, especially if I have to attend the class from home.

In a brief search, I only found three residential colleges for naturopathy—one in Washington state, one in Oregon & one in Arizona.

My personal opinion is that I would not trust a correspondence school like Clayton very much. I saw one naturopath from that school, and he disappointed me. Once I was in Chinatown in NYC and inquired about ginseng in an herbal store. I was shown between 5 and 10 different ginseng herbs. I was told they all had different strengths and were priced accordingly. Later I heard the Clayton naturopath tell someone "Oh, you can get ginseng anywhere. Go into a health food food store and get some teabags." He did not have a clue about the different strengths of ginseng.

A Clayton naturopath is Hulda Clark, author of "The Cure for All Diseases," "The Cure for HIV and AIDS" and "The Cure for All Cancers." If her cures worked, she would be one of the most famous people on the planet and winner of multiple Nobel Prizes.

Perhaps you can learn a lot from Clayton College, but I would trust resident programs more. Good luck.

When we feel sick, we expect a cure and a pill. But doctors are looking to integrate more natural remedies into there treatment regimens. So is alternative medicine the cure?

unlike the posters aboves advice, many doctors are including alternative medicine and herbs into their practice and have for years. both my females doctors did..one over 20 years ago and both got a 4.0 in college, are very smart and sensitive to their patients needs. The poster is back in the dark ages saying to change doctors.

Unfortunately few doctors do this and many are afraid to as some have lost their licenses over this as the AMA does not wish to go this way except nominally and only because the consumer is demanding it.

The problem is because we do not believe we create our illnesses due to the decadent lifestyles we live (smoking, drugs, junk foods, too much salt, sugar, lack of exercise, worry, out of control stress and so forth, we expect the doctors to fix us back up with a pill..this requires very potent drugs which often require the use of other drugs and often does more harm than good in the long run.

Much alternative health works by working synergistically to help the body heal itself by stopping the bad habits and starting new ones.

Many people do not want to do this…they want to feel great and live however they want..

Alternative health is a very broad field encompasses many aura and types. some work great, some don’t and some work on one part of our health and some work on the whole person.

Herbs are in many cases superior as they are safe and designed to heal our bodies by nature or our creator while drugs are generally non-organic, man made chemicals the body accepts but at harm to it so herbs are safer..Just a tiny handful of people die from herbs while tens of thousands die from drugs and doctor errors etc.

Also drugs create the symptom but herbs go to the root cause that is causing diverse symptoms the doctor calls by various disease names, thus the herb tends to while slower in the long run fix more problems we have than just the one we took it for.

You can expect alternative health to not be as useful for emergency situations like a limb cut off in an accident or something like that but herbs to do better with chronic diseases

You can expect if you know what you are doing and do a comprehensive multi part program combing things like a vegan diet, exercise, detoxing., cleansing the elimination organs, improving water and air, getting sunshine, taking herbs, doing affirmations and stress reduction, hydrotherapy, stopping bad habits, getting counseling or learning to love and be happier, etc all done together in an intense health building program to cure things doctors cannot like AIDS, pancreatic and lung cancers, neurological disease like ms, heart and circulatory problems, diabetes and terminal illnesses.

Yes, natural health can certainly be a cure..that is not to say once in a while you won’t maybe need a doctor but most things I have found we can fix ourselves..when we discover we cause many of our illnesses with our lifestyles, we can be empowered to discover that if we can make our self sick by living badly, we can make ourselves better and heal by living good.

Generally, although doctors may be discovering the good things about alternative health and wanting to jump on the consumer bandwagon and thus incorporating alternative health into their stuff is good for them, it is not s good for you or alternative health as allopathic drugs etc can make it harder to recover naturally due to the harm of those things they often use.

IMO there is a place for both..I was in a car wreck a while back and feel in that case I needed doctors but generally I am able to cure myself with herbs etc better with herbs, supplements etc.

what is needed to make herbs and alternative health work better is education, people making their own organic tinctures (or finding a superior tincture supplier) and forgoing herbs in a capsule that are conventionally grown, understanding that herbs and foods work best in a comprehensive health building regime, doing most of their grocery shopping at natural food stores, farmer’s markets, from small organic farmers and their own gardens., doing different cleanses one a season, thinking more positively and loving themselves and others better and learning to stop hating and forgive.

this may be more complicated and difficult than going to a doctor and saying doctor heal me with a pill but it gains more long lasting results, saves lots of money and worry and gives us payoffs we can see and be proud of..also for every person who takes better care of themselves, health costs go down

So for a retail store that sells a product for £11, generally what would they pay for it? Given that the wholesaler would pay for the transport costs.

I understand that the markup would differ somewhat based on the location of the store. But in a general sense

Also, what it make a difference if the wholesaler isn’t registered for Vat.

The mark up would be between 75% and a 100%. This is a normal mark up for most goods in any store.

To the response before this, I understand your concern, and I’d agree with it, but I don’t believe that (s)he is saying FDA approval isn’t being sought out eventually. Rather, I get the impression that in the meantime between the approval (which from what I’ve heard, the approval may be a very lengthy time period), understandably, some return on the cost of production would be sought as well as a sort of trial run.

I do not know the industry, but, I do believe that especially if it’s a natural health product, you can sell it as a natural food rather than a medicine, in the same classification of herbs and herbal teas which are sold alongside organic foods rather than on the same grocer aisle as medicines. I’d look into marketing it in this fashion, and though this means you cannot make actual backed medical claims (I do not know the details), there are always around this, especially if marketed well.

This is one of those MLM deals where you do home shows, you have a little inventory and do catalogue sales, and what you do is you get a bunch of people together (generally women, but some guys are interested in skin care products), and they will try various treatments and lotions…basically what you provide is the samples, you get a hostess to host the show and she gets free product depending on how much is ordered, you get a percentage of the sales and it’s generally a pretty generous percentage. I don’t know all the details off hand, my wife knows a consultant and she could certainly find out. Let me know if you’d like me to find out more information about this company or not. I know the stuff isn’t dirt cheap, but it’s also not overpriced. It’s all natural products made with essential oils and such, and it works really well, smells nice and there’s a huge selection…it’s definitely not priced out of the hands of the ordinary consumer. I think it’s probably exactly what you described, but like I said, I only know what I know second hand, so if you want more info, please let me know and I’ll have my wife talk to her friend who is a consultant and find out how someone can get into this, what the start up costs are, etc.

As a general rule, purchase cost less than 1/2 retail .. in this case less than £5 – £6 …

.. however in the ‘luxury’ / ‘health’ market, markups can easily be x10 (so £1 to £1.20).

Go look in any ‘Body Shop’ store .. consider the large number of staff ‘hanging around’ (they never seem to be doing anything, but they all have to be paid) .. consider the wide open spaces, fancy packaging of the products (packaging has to be paid for, as do the workers who (manually) wrap the product) .. plainly this has to be a ‘high end’ business (high mark-ups)

Then contrast with eg. Woolworth’s .. see the goods plied high on shelves crammed together with almost zero isle space and one or two tills with staff (if you can find any) working their b*lls off .. plainly this is the low end (low mark-up) business …

I have had artificial nails for at least 7 years. I now want to remove them. I know my natural nail bed is going to be weak, sensitive and brittle. What products work best to restore health to natural nails after years of abuse?

Purchase some nail polish remover with acetone and put it in a glass dish and soak them off. It will be a somewhat slow process, but if you go to the salon to get it done they will most likely "pop" them off which really hurts and does lots of damage to your nail beds. If you soak them off, put a towel over them while they’re soaking so you don’t get all the fumes. Use an orangewood stick to gently remove them once they get soft enough to do so. After you’ve gotten all of the residue off of your natural nails, shape them up with a nail file and gently push back your cuticles. Don’t cut your cuticles because if you cut them too much you can allow them to get infected. Clean off your nails and make sure they are free of oils. I would recommend Nail Envy by OPI, the original formula. It has directions inside the box that it comes in, but I always told my clients to put 2 coats of it on then one more every other day to help strengthen and protect your nails until a whole new nail grew in. Definitely use a cuticle oil or balm every night before you go to bed, massaging it in gently, which will stimulate the nail beds to grow and keep your cuticles soft and healthy. Remove all of the Nail Envy once a week and start over again with 2 new coats. You can wear polish over it too if you would like to, just use a good top coat (OPI is really great, the fast drying one) to seal the color with. Taking prenatals is great for your nails too when you’re trying to grow them out. Any kind will be fine. If you can afford to get natural nail manicures, that will help a lot too! Get "Alive" magazine free at your local health food store. At the back you’ll find lots of natural health listings including some colleges. You could become a holistic nutritionist, a naturopath, a homeopath, chiropracter, osteopath, massage therapist (Active Release, Bowen method, Rolfing, Cranial-sacral therapy, or any combination, this is a huge field). Many natural health practitioners get certified in different fields and use them when indicated depending on the type of problems the patient has.

I know of Bastyr, if you’re talking about the University in Washington (http://www.bastyr.edu/). It looks like Clayton College of Natural Health offers an online education, which is less than optimal given the choice. Hands-on is always better.

I debated on attending Bastyr when deciding whether to become a ND or homeopath. A medical doctor (friend) who also trained as an acupuncturist in China presented me with a simple question: What do you want to do? My answer, thus solution: Homeopathy.

I was looking into Online college class for Natural Health. I am just seeing if this school is good or NOT! I did check witht he BBB and they did have one complaint that was fixed .

Yep, I’m currently enrolled. I’m a passive person and my instructors/staff are not pushing the "fire" and motivating me. So you have to be a self-starter and do what you have to do to finish if you choose this school.

I’m thinking about attending Clayton College of Natural Health. I’m curious if anyone knows of any licensing restrictions or legalities in Missouri for holisitc / natural health counselors? I’m told that you can open a practice as long as you don’t claim to treat, prevent, cure or diagnose illness, which basically means you could counsel people and work with nutrition, lifestyles and general wellness. I am very interested in the natural medicine field, and the first degree I would obtain would be a bachelors of science in natural health. Are there any jobs that I could obtain with just that degree?

If you’re at the college already, you should talk to your academic advisor. If you’re not going onto grad or medical school, then you can possibly apply your skills at a government organization, as many of the ‘Departments of ….’ are science based. You could also apply your skills at a corporation, but you’d definitely want to find one you believe in.

There are 10000s of websites on nutrition and natural healing etc on the iternet and I am wondering how one finds the reliable ones, not ones trying to sell you something or scaring you half to death or even writing untrue and innacurate things about food and health. I know there are a few reputable doctors specializing in alternative medicine with websites, but what about others? Nutritionists? How do you know if its not a bunch of heresay?

This is a big question. I have researched for years in this field and I think the problem is the basics are true;
1. Get rid of processed foods and start eating more raw ingredients.
2. Move away from chemical laden personal items like shampoo, soap, household cleansers, etc.
3. Supplement at least organic minerals like selenium (cancer), chromium (diabetes) and magnesium (heart disease).

These principles are sound and backed up with solid scientific evidence. The problem come in with our reluctance to actually CHANGE our lifestyles. This brings on all the hucksters with magic pills and "vitamins" to where we don’t have to change. There is also a large number of people who have already waited too long and are seeking a cure for the diseases created by inadequate nutrition or toxic exposure.

Even though some of them do have items to sell, everyone has to make a living and I judge by the availability of information. Have you noticed that there is often a sharp divide in between the allopathic health community and the naturopathic health community? In other words, the Medical Doctors and the Natural Health Professionals often seem to disagree fundamentally. But which is right?

Perhaps it is not so much of an issue of being right as it is an issue of roles and expertise. Perhaps it is not that Medical Doctors are bad or that natural health solutions are a hoax. Perhaps they should work together!

In the part one of this report, we’ll discuss the medical side of the issue: Pros and cons. Then we’ll do the same for the natural side, then wrap the discussion up.

The downside of the allopathic approach to health

One of the biggest problems with the medical approach to health is side effects. Quite simply, there are no pharmaceutical drugs that do not have undesirable side effects. Some have fewer side effects, some have more. Some side effects are very serious, others are not. But all drugs have side effects.

Another bad aspect to allopathic health is that it generally is designed to artificially and often superficially correct the problem, but not deal with the root issue. For example, when you take cold medicine, it does nothing for your cold – it just suppresses the symptoms so that you don’t notice the cold symptoms as much.

So for me, the biggest problems with using pharmaceuticals is that they are toxic, can be dangerous, and often do not address the root health issue.

On the plus side, the Medical approach excels in crisis situations. For example, if I were in a car accident and were in critical condition, I would not go see a nutritionist. I would go to the hospital, where they could forcefully intervene and hopefully save my life.

While the allopathic approach to health certainly has it’s share of faults, the natural health approach is not perfect either.

Probably the biggest issue the natural health community faces is the issue of quality and truth. In other words, what really works, and what doesn’t? You sometimes have to dig through a lot of dirt to find the gold, as the proverb says.

Often times a particular nutrient, plant, or source may be helpful, but the end product is not. One study showed that some antioxidant products actually had an oxidative effect. Why? Because the company producing them had not properly researched, developed, and tested their products.

The greatest strength of the natural approach is that it generally works with your body, instead of against it or in spite of it, like the medical approach does. There are exceptions to this, though. Many herbs are really just natural drugs, so you should be careful with them.

But nutritional supplements, for example, work with your body to strengthen, build up, and equip your body to protect, defend and restore your health naturally, with no side effects. The flip side of the coin is of course that nutrition takes time to do it’s job. In critical cases, something more abrupt is needed – perhaps something the medical community has to offer.

That leads us to the conclusion: perhaps the solution is for natural and medical health practices to work together to create an even healthier you.

What if you were to use improved nutrition, nutritional supplements and other natural methods to naturally improve your health, but still use “conventional” medical approaches when needed? The key is to balance the cost and the benefits. Is not feeling your cold symptoms worth the potential side effects and long term health damage that you could get from using cold medication? On the other hand, if you have an infection, is running the risk of a serious infection or running the risk of damage from antibiotics worse?

Get the facts, balance the issues, and use natural and medical approaches together for the best of health!

The Clayton College of Natural Health is a distance education instituted devoted to helping people gain accreditation in various realms of health related fields. Some individuals benefit from taking distance education courses from this institution but others may not be suited for such a program. Following is some information about the Clayton College of Natural Health for you to consider.

First of all you want to think about your specific goals. You may find that you are heading down a career path that requires you to become very familiar with holistic nutrition, traditional naturopathy or natural health. These are the only subjects that degree programs fall under at the Clayton College of Natural Health.

Other programs offer certificates for subjects like herbal studies, iridology studies, healthcare professional studies and companion animal studies. There is no degree earned though these four subjects and I’m not quite sure how a certificate from any of those subjects could be used.

Some of the information offered by the Clayton College of Natural Health is a little unfamiliar to most. If you want to earn a degree in traditional naturopathy it would be best to look into the field a little before signing up for any classes. You may find that you are really interested in taking a holistic approach to your health studies.

There are some concerns about taking classes for accreditation at a distance education institution like the Clayton College of Natural Health. Since this seems to fall into the realm of medicine in a holistic kind of way it is certain that some may find the programs to be a little too unscientific for many healthcare professionals.

Consider where you will be employed in the future. If your goal is to work as a nutritionist for a large hospital you may want to forgo the Clayton College of Natural Health as an educational option. However, if you want to start a health and wellness consultation business you might be attracted to the degrees and certificates that the Clayton College of Natural Health has to offer.

The alternative health field is not for everyone. Many people prefer taking the traditional route to healthcare and nutrition. However, many others are drawn to alternative medicine as well. It is important to note that not everyone recognizes the Clayton College of Natural Medicine as a means of valid accreditation. Today, with more and more people taking a keen interest in natural health and natural remedies, the time has come for natural health writing to also come of age.
